TotalEnergies Unveils New Battery Storage Venture in Belgium

In a significant stride towards bolstering Belgium’s energy infrastructure, TotalEnergies has announced the inauguration of a pioneering battery storage project in the country. This development marks a pivotal moment in the nation’s journey towards sustainable energy solutions and underscores TotalEnergies’ commitment to driving innovation in the sector.

The announcement was made during Belgian Energy Minister Tinne Van der Straeten’s visit to TotalEnergies’ Antwerp refinery battery storage project. The company disclosed plans for the establishment of a second similar project in Belgium, further solidifying its position as a key player in the nation’s energy landscape.

Located at TotalEnergies’ depot in Feluy, the newly unveiled project boasts a formidable power rating of 25 MW and a capacity of 75 MWh. This feat is made possible through the integration of forty Intensium Max High Energy lithium-ion containers supplied by Saft, a testament to TotalEnergies’ unwavering commitment to leveraging cutting-edge technology for sustainable energy solutions. With an anticipated start-up slated for the end of 2025, this initiative is poised to significantly enhance Belgium’s energy resilience and contribute to alleviating grid congestion issues.

The combined investment in these two projects stands at an impressive €70 million, signaling TotalEnergies’ substantial commitment to advancing energy storage capabilities in Belgium. Upon completion, the storage capacity in the country will reach a formidable 50 MW / 150 MWh, underscoring the company’s proactive approach towards meeting the nation’s growing energy demands.

These battery storage sites are poised to play a pivotal role in fortifying Belgium’s electricity system, offering much-needed flexibility and aiding in mitigating the intermittency associated with renewable energy sources. Furthermore, they are set to foster the proliferation of renewable energy adoption, providing a vital mechanism to offset the challenges posed by their variable nature.

Commenting on the milestone, Olivier Jouny, Senior Vice President, Integrated Power at TotalEnergies, expressed enthusiasm for the company’s continued strides in advancing energy solutions: “We are pleased to announce this new storage project in Feluy, just a year after we began our Antwerp project. These initiatives align seamlessly with our integrated development strategy for electricity, not only in Belgium but on a global scale.”

Moreover, TotalEnergies’ expansive presence across Belgium’s electricity value chain further underscores its pivotal role in driving the nation’s energy transition. From supplying electricity to a portfolio of 900,000 customers to spearheading electricity production through various ventures, including CCGT power plants, hydroelectric storage facilities, and offshore wind farms, the company is at the forefront of shaping Belgium’s energy landscape.

In addition to its formidable presence in electricity production, TotalEnergies is actively driving electric mobility initiatives across the country, with over 10,000 charging points in operation. These charging points, strategically located in key urban centers, underscore the company’s commitment to facilitating the widespread adoption of electric vehicles and fostering a sustainable transportation ecosystem.

TotalEnergies’ unwavering dedication to advancing sustainable energy solutions continues to position Belgium as a frontrunner in the global energy transition. As the company forges ahead with its ambitious battery storage projects and electric mobility initiatives, it reaffirms its commitment to shaping a more sustainable and resilient energy future for generations to come.
