Pratt & Whitney to Invest $20 Million to Expand GTF Engine Maintenance Capacity in Florida by 40%

The American manufacturer Pratt & Whitney (P&W) has announced a $20 million investment to enhance its maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) capacity for GTF engines at the West Palm Beach Engine Center in Florida. The expansion will accommodate a 40% increase in capacity and is expected to be completed by the second half of 2025.

To accommodate the planned growth, the facility will increase its workforce by 25% over the next year and add critical equipment in areas such as machining, testing, cleaning, and storage. It will also incorporate transformative technologies developed in the recently announced North American Technology Accelerator.

“The expansion in West Palm Beach is the latest example of our global investment to support the GTF fleet,” said Kevin Kirkpatrick, Vice President of Global Aftermarket Operations at Pratt & Whitney. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to supporting customers and maintaining their trust as we execute the GTF fleet management plan.”

West Palm Beach was transformed into a fully capable GTF engine MRO center in mid-2021. It was the first Pratt & Whitney facility to adopt an automated system that assembles the high-pressure compressor (HPC) rotor and a refined suspended engine handling system.

Since implementation, Pratt & Whitney has seen over a 25% improvement in HPC rotor yield and a 50% reduction in process response time.

In 2023, Pratt & Whitney announced three expansions of GTF MRO facilities and five shop activations to support the growing GTF fleet. There are currently 16 active GTF engine MRO centers worldwide, with three more expected to come online by 2025.

GTF engines are used by the European manufacturer Airbus for its A220 and A320 aircraft and by the Brazilian Embraer for the E-Jets E2.
